1. One of the funny things about Beijing is how there are so many historic sites dotted about town that I’m constantly coming across  seriously cool (and old) stuff that in any other city would be a BIG deal…but in Beijing is so normal that it doesn’t even muster a mention in the guidebooks.  Case in point: although I’ve lived here for four years, I had never heard of Nantang Catholic cathedral (parts of which date to 1604!) until I stumbled upon it while traipsing around the Qianmen neighborhood last weekend.
